What are Dunce-Hats & where they came from

The Dunce Hat or cap was originally worn by esoteric philosophers. The dunce hat is related to a 13 century philosopher named John Duns Scotus (he was a native to Scotland) He was a hard man to understand but had a band of loyal followers who came to be known as the Dunceman. The Dunceman were riduculed in the 16 century because of advances in philosophical thought that led to the rejection of his teachings, so he and his followers, the Dunsmen, were frowned upon.

The Term“dunce” came to be associated with “idiot.” Many of his followers resisted advances in thought, leading to obstinateness and slowness with dunces.

The Dunsmen used to wear the conical shaped dunce cap because they believed that the hat would make them smarter . The idea of an apex or point representing the pinnacle of knowledge was common to many societies, Mr Duns believed that the hat would funnel learning down to the to the person wering the Dunce hat.

Dunce Hats or caps were probably made from some type of felt or other rigid fabric so that they would not sag as they were worn. A dunce cap, also known as a dunce hat, or dunce's cap, or dunce's hat, is a pointed hat. a Dunce hat is usually made of paper and often marked with a D or the word dunce. The Dunce hat was given to school kids to wear as punishment by publically humiliating them for misbehaving and, as the name implies, being stupid.

The Dunce hat may have started out as something to be proud of, but the dunce hat began to be used as a was of humiliating someone because of the association with duncemen.

Dunce hats were used as punishment for unrully kids in the classroom. The dunce hat was placed on top of a Childs head and he was made to sit in the corner of a classroom with the dunce hat on.

Students who were lazy or or slow or considered stupid were forced to sit in the corner of the classroom with a dunce hat or cap on as a form of punishement. The dunce hat was ment to be humiliating to the student in order to try and correct there attitude.

Dunce hats or caps are no longer used in classrooms today, Society has modernised and the wearing of a dunce hat would be too much embarasement on a student in todays society. Dunce hats had there day. But Dunce hats are a thing of the past.

The only place you can find a dunce hat is either on a cartoon or either in a novelty shop, as schools have outlawed dunce hats.
